Can anyone tell me what ‘SQ’ stands for – on restaurant menus, usually next to expensive items, like crayfish? Two suggestions have included ‘Subject to Quantity’ and ‘Seasonal Quotation’, but nobody I have spoken to really knows for sure.

means “Salon Qualitaire”. Originally because eating houses used to judge the quality of the item served, and therefore the price.
We now use a more common english “subject to quotation”…certain foods like shellfish or specialised meats are weighed before cooking or have fluctuating or seasonal prices.
But google could have given you that…
Thank you for putting me out of my misery so quickly!
I did indeed try Google, and ‘sq’ returned 96,100,000 results. ‘sq menu restaurant’ returned 1,010,000 results
Salon Qualitaire is also not on acronyms.com
There is only one return on Google for “Salon Qualitaire” – from women24.com
…Dolcemundo…
“stupid question”…if you have to ask – you can’t afford it.
Wow! I didn’t know that.
Salon Qualitaire!
Sounds like something one should repeat over and over…
not the payment part of course. Yikes.
I’ve always taken it as ‘spensive quote and ordered something else!
I like “stupid question” !!
‘Spensive Quote is also good!
Thanks for popping by, bewilderbeast. Looks like you’re getting the hang of this blogging beast…
Seasonal quote- the cost of especially seafood differs with season so does the retail
Thanks Morné. but I think ‘Seasonal quote’ is another one of those ‘educated’ guesses, much like people try to guess what ‘sic’ means, or ‘QED’. I appreciate the feedback though, thanks.
Hi!
This seems to be nice blog.
Thanks Lynxwoman – good to see you popping in!
Interesting Post. At a restaurant At the moment where sq is used to indicate that there is no price list for available teas in stock.
Thanks Lara, that’s a usage I haven’t seen before – how on earth do they charge you then?
