21 Years ago today, my mum did what many of us intend to do; and what we regret not having done, when it is too late.

My mum (‘Me’ in this story), sat down with her father, my grandfather (‘G’), and asked him to tell her as much about his life as he could recall. She recorded Grandpa’s Story over a few days, on cassette. Sometimes the recording is indistinct, and words are garbled or have been lost – so I make no promises of literary excellence, and remind you that these are the memories of an 85-year old man – not always coherent; not always accurate. But very real, insofar as he led his life the best way he believed was possible. And there are snippets of the morals and mores of a bygone era, which we can only guess at, as we pass through our new world, in such a tearing hurry.

Feeling a bit like a bloated slug, I took myself off for a wobble-and-plod around Rondebosch Common earlier this evening. And finding most forms of useful exercise boring and uncomfortable, I have an array of toys to amuse me along the way: the heart rate monitor ensures that I do not over-exert myself, and the pedometer tells me how many kilojoules I have incinerated.
