Globally, after many natural disasters, the press is filled with stories about how all kinds of animals get lost, found, rescued and reunited with families.

It’s been over a month since the xenophobia attacks. Many people are still fearful, displaced and homeless. But I have not yet come across one story about the animals that were left behind. I’m pretty sure that the useful animals, like cows, goats and chickens, were ‘redistributed’ within communities. But what about the pets? What happened to the dogs and cats?

Ten years ago, I was doing stupid things like running marathons. Being genetically challenged, I battled to break the two-hour mark on the half marathon. So I read Tim Noakes’ ‘The Lore of Running.’ He said, “If you want to run faster, you have to run faster”. So I did. And I cracked that two-hour mark. It was bloody hard work. But I did it.

Three years ago today, Axel F’s Crazy Frog hit the top of the UK charts. One of those whirlwind fads which took the world by storm; you either loved it or hated it.

From Wiki: “Crazy Frog is an animated character used in the marketing of a ring tone based on The Annoying Thing, a computer animation created by Erik Wernquist. Marketed by the ringtone provider Jamba!, the animation was originally created to accompany a sound effect produced by Daniel Malmedahl while attempting to imitate the sound of a two-stroke moped engine. The Crazy Frog spawned a worldwide hit single with a remix of “Axel F”, which reached the number one spot in the United Kingdom, Turkey, New Zealand, Australia and most of Europe.”

If you have bandwidth to waste, have a squizz at the video here, or listen to the original sound while taking the Insanity Test here.

I confess. I had the ringtone. And it still makes me laugh.

“Hello, I’d like to confirm employment of Goodman Tini please.”
“Who’s speaking?”
“It’s Bianca, from Russells in Claremont.”
“OK. Hi Bianca. Yes, Goodman does work for me. Why do you want to know?”
“Goodman wants to buy a room divider on HP, and we need to establish his credit-worthiness.”
“How much is the room divider?”
“Three thousand five hundred rand plus VAT.”
“How much will the monthly repayments be, and over what period?
“Four hundred rand a month, for 24 months.”
“That’s over nine thousand rand?”
“Yes ma’am.”
